We hope that you are having a great summer and that
you are all getting a change of pace, a little more
relaxation, and time to play!
We had a great time at The Link’s California
Homeschool Conference in early June and the Southern
California Catholic Home Educator’s Conference on
June 24. Thanks to all who attended our workshops
or took the time to come by our booth to meet us or
to purchase a product. We appreciate all of you!
This month’s Attitude of LearningSuccess is the R
from our C.A.R.E.S. and F.I.T.T. Principles:
R: Respond rather than React
Learn to listen, acknowledge, and wait. This means
when someone says something to you, instead of
immediately reacting, you truly listen, you
acknowledge the other person’s opinion or feelings,
and you wait to hear what else the person has to say.
Here is your assignment:
State these daily as Declarations:
Every morning say 5 times...
Adults: When someone speaks to me, I listen,
acknowledge, and wait.
Parents: When my child speaks to me, I listen,
acknowledge, and wait.
Kids: When my parents speak to me, I listen,
acknowledge, and wait.
Teachers: When my students speak to me, I listen,
acknowledge, and wait.
In the evening, think of your conversations and list
the times you listened, acknowledged, and waited.
What was the effect of doing this? Did these
conversations turn out to be more satisfying?
Do this every day for the next month and notice any
changes. We’d love to hear about them!

Summer: A Great Time to Encourage Interests |
 |
This is the time for children of all Talents,
Learning Dispositions, and Modalities to pursue an
often neglected aspect of Learning Style—Interests.
For most families there is no other time of year
that has the same freedom to explore, discover,
ponder, browse, tarry, or charge ahead that summer does.
Sometimes we think that we have to make BIG PLANS
for the summer when actually our children might be
very happy to pursue some of their favorite things.
This is the time of the year when a
Thinking/Creating Disposition child can read or
wonder, or dream, or draw all day long. This is the
time of the year when an Inventing Disposition child
can chase creepy crawly things through the grasses
or work on the latest computer something-or-other.
This is the time that Relating/Inspiring
Disposition children can finally get together to
their hearts’ content. It is the time that a
Performing Disposition child can get the kinks out
and ride bikes, skateboard, dance, put on plays and
revues, etc.
And, believe it or not, even Producing Disposition
children have interests outside of school; they
often gladly welcome some time to be free from the
structure and regimentation of academics so that
they can pursue what they like without time or grade
pressures.

Interests: For Adults, Too! |
 |
Summer is a good time to change the pace for adults,
too—not just the kids! We realize that “little
things” like jobs and family obligations can take
all your time, but we encourage you to re-discover
that interest or hobby that you haven’t thought
about in so long that it lives somewhere in the back
of your mind covered with cobwebs! Dust it off, get
excited about it again, and make some time for it.
We all need time to follow our interests...
Who knows—you might love it so much that it could
even take you into a new career path! At the least,
you will feel refreshed and renewed because you are
filling your spirit with something that makes you
feel great.

Spelling for the Thoroughly Befuddled |
 |
Did you know that spelling can be fun even for
“poor” spellers?
“Poor” spellers are usually people who are picture
or hands-on learners. Workbooks do not work for them
and neither does writing the words over and over 100
times! Here is a technique that leads to
LearningSuccess:
Choose a word or two and make a game out of thinking
up memory tricks for that word. For example, to
remember "etc." you might notice that the first two
letters are ET (as in the cute alien). Most people
that misspell this word reverse the order of the "c"
and "t". But once they realize that ET is in there,
it's easy to tack the "c" on at the end and they
never misspell it again!
How about “luncheon?” Most poor spellers can already
spell lunch - that part is not a problem. On a card,
write: lunch E ON
Make the E and ON in different colors. Have the
student practice closing his eyes and seeing the way
it's written on the card (large E and ON, the
colors, etc.). Pronounce the word as "lunch" "e"
"on" - in a few days this will be an easy word to spell.
Or how about “friend?” The i and e cause the most
trouble. Try writing on a card: fr I end
Then put a face and hair on the big I, plus arms and
legs...say "I am a friend to the end."
Be sure to choose only one or two words to work on
at a time. Have the student help in choosing the
words. Think of tricks: pictures, colors, size of
letters, dividing the word up in certain ways...
Put words on cards and post them around the house
during the learning period. As words are learned put
the cards alphabetically into a card file box and
choose new words to learn.
If you like this technique and want more structured
instructions, check out our Link-Up to Spelling
program that gives you week by week lessons for 18
weeks. Plan NOW for the coming school year...go to

This could also be a fun summer activity if it's
kept light and not perceived as "school." Enjoy!!!
